All You Need to Know About – International Yoga Day!!!

Yoga is a mental and physical discipline which has been originated in India. When there is yoga there is no impurity, ignorance, or injustice. Every year the international yoga day is celebrated on 21st of June. On 11th of December this day was recognised internationally by the United Nations General Assembly. Our honourable prime minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi advised 21st of June as an international yoga day because it is the protracted day of the year in northern moiety also has a peculiar connotation in many parts of the world. Before the declaration of June 21st as a yoga day many formal and informal yoga teachers used to celebrate yoga day on various other dates. A proposal for the observing world yoga day was made at the conference organised in the art of living international centre. The conference was about yoga as a key to world reconciliation which was organised by the art of living foundation, VYASA University in Bangalore and the yoga Portuguese confederation of Lisbon and Portugal.

Origin of International Yoga Day

However, the idea of observing world yoga day had been originated in 2001 by a large number of yoga gurus endorsing it for the very first time. Deelipji on 21st of June 2015 inaugurated the opening ceremony of world yoga day community. A non profit organisation in New York namely world yoga community aims at promoting yogic teachings worldwide. This day was declared after the suggestion for the adoption of June 21st as world yoga day by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his arrival in the UN general assembly on 27th September, 2014. In the assembly Modi ji stated that, “yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient tradition. This 5000 year old tradition embodies unity of mind and body, thoughts and action, harmony between human and the nature which is a holistic approach to health and well- being. It is about discovering the oneness within you and not only about the exercise.

How Prime Minister Modi Started the Journey Of Yoga Day

Moreover, it helps us to deal with the climatic changes by changing our lifestyle and being conscious. Let us work towards adopting as international yoga day.”India’s permanent representative Asoka Mukherji on 11th of October, 2014, introduced a draft resolution in UNGA. The draft text received support from 177 states without any vote. The initiative was supported by many global leaders. The resolution was co- sponsored by a total of 175 countries. The first yoga day was observed on 21st June, 2015. The ministry of AYUSH- Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, homeopathy made arrangements in India. Approximately 35985, including PM Narendra Modi and luminaries from 84 nations, performed 21 yoga asanas for about half an hour at raj path in New Delhi. This event established two Guinness world records being awarded to the ministry of AYUSH for largest yoga class and 84 nations participating in an event. On this day our eminent Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “We are training the human minds to begin a new era of peace and amity. It is necessary for human minds to be developed internally. He said that there was a time when we could not even imagine of celebrating this day. But who knew that one raj path will be yog path.”

Participants, including government peoples, members of NCC and even school children performed asana. The Asanas were divided into sections starting with the loosening up of body like neck bending, body twisting. The second asana comprised of six yoga asana in a standing posture which included tad asana and vriksh asana. Third with five sitting asana. It was estimated that approx 250 million people around the world practice yoga. The Delhi metro services began from 4:00am, Sunday, 21st of June. Two special trains were also provided with a view of the international yoga day. Intelligence agencies were warned of a possible aerial attack for which massive preparations of securities were done in the national capital on yoga day. 4000 police personnel and 1500 traffic police were united for the event and anti- craft weapons provided air protection for the event which was followed by Indian air forces with security agencies.

For the sake of coverage of the event, public broadcaster Doordarshan deployed over 20 hi- definition cameras. Approx 18 cameras gave full round coverage to stage and several outdoor broadcast vans for live coverage were put into service. Indian mission at the United Nations, New York had also organised an event and invited our external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj to participate in this event. PM, Modi had deployed his ministers to participate in the event across the world. While everyone was in favour of this day, The All India Muslim Personal Law Board asserted against Surya Namaskar being not in favour of the Islamic religion and was worried about the ‘Hindu Agenda’ at work. To protect the rights of this religion, Surya Namaskar was removed from official yoga program. The government was reciting the ‘Shalokas’ during yoga day, but it was not compulsory for Muslims to participate in the event. Then the minister of AYUSH, Mr. Shripad Naik said that Muslims can take the name of Allah instead of reciting ‘Shalokas’ during the event.
